For young children, most of what they learn comes during playtime, in addition to structured educational activities. Studies have shown that young children see learning and play as one in the same – not separate activities. Perhaps the way they view the world and interact within it makes it this way because nearly everything a young child does is a new experience and an opportunity to learn.
During play, children not only improve and develop their motor skills as they race toy cars across the carpet, finger paint or perform an impromptu puppet show, they also develop the essential interpersonal skills which will help them excel during the rest of their lives. During play, children learn and improve their:
Social Skills – Children learn cooperation and conflict resolution by playing with their peers. But they also learn sharing, kindness, and acceptance of others.
Language – Playing with other children requires communication. During playtime, children develop essential verbal abilities and listening skills.
Cognitive Development – Imaginative play, such as playing grocery store, house or doctor, requires children to recall memories, solve problems and make decisions. This encourages the development of the essential parts of their brains that will help them succeed as adults.
Patience – Play also presents challenges to children, teaching them focus, patience and perseverance as they learn new skills. Through play children also learn how to cooperate with each other by taking turns and working together.
