No baby comes with an instruction manual and for parents coming home with a new baby it can be exciting and scary at the same time. So, although your child doesn’t come with instructions, there’s plenty of good advice available to help you along the way.
Celebrate Baby Safety Month in September with These Baby Safety Tips
- Follow the instructions and advice from your doctors and take advantage of parenting classes!
- If your little one will be in another room utilizing a baby monitor with both video and sound is a great way to keep an eye on them.
- Practice safe sleep: keep cribs free of clutter, avoid overheating your bundle, and use string-free pacifiers.
- Use a new crib and car seat if possible. Sure, you can save some money with previously used supplies, but safety standards change, and products are recalled often. Make sure you purchase these items new or at least double check that they are still up to standards and have not been damaged or recalled.
- Read car seat instructions carefully and make sure yours is installed correctly.
- Don’t wait for baby to start crawling before you baby proof the house. Install cabinet latches, outlet covers, store detergents on high shelves, and be mindful of drapes and blinds. Ensure that furniture and heavy objects such as TVs are secured to the wall.
- Never leave baby unattended in the bath and never leave standing water unattended in/around your house for any length of time.
- Stay safe in the sun. Babies can’t cool down as efficiently as older children. Use sunscreen. Limit time outdoors to just a few minutes in warmer weather.
- Trust your instincts. If you think something seems wrong, trust yourself and contact your pediatrician.
- When possible avoid taking your baby around anyone that is sick and do not allow others to kiss your child and remind visitors to wash hands.
