While science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) subjects grow into complicated fields of study, your child starts learning the basics from the moment they come into the world. Infants begin to learn cause and effect and problem solving almost immediately. They learn quickly that when they cry out, they’ll be tended to and that when they suck on a thumb, they feel soothed.
As infants develop into toddlers and preschoolers, they acquire more knowledge and begin developing even more STEM-related skills. You can help them foster this early development, so that they’ll benefit from improved skills later in life — even if you’re not a rocket scientist yourself!
How to Foster Your Preschooler’s STEM Education
Science is all about curiosity, and who’s more curious than preschoolers? You can help your child develop the skills they’ll use later in life while studying STEM subjects by helping to cultivate their innate abilities to ask questions, observe their surroundings, and to hypothesize. You can find teachable STEM moments during even the most mundane daily activities.
For example, you can teach them math by counting and measurement by talking about different weights and heights. Observe the shapes of signs on the road to learn geometry and talk about cooking to learn chemistry. Learn about life sciences, when they grow out of their clothes, and Earth science when the weather changes. Help them observe patterns in shapes, colors, textures, and sizes.
Most importantly, encourage them to ask questions — who, what, where, why, how, and when — about the things they observe.
STEM Subjects as a Part of Early Childhood Development Curriculum
At Creative Corner Child Care, we include age-appropriate STEM subjects like math and science in our daily curriculum, which encourages learning through creative play and structured exploration. If you’re looking for a preschool or child care provider that goes beyond babysitting, we welcome you to take a look at our STEM curriculum and to schedule a tour of our learning center for preschoolers.
