10 Tips to Keep Your Child Healthy at Child Care

Baby Sneezing

Children are notorious for sharing germs. I type this just after my son sneezed directly into my face with no remorse. The truth is, it’s impossible to prevent sharing germs sometimes, especially with little ones who have no concept of manners or hygiene. At Creative Corner Child Care Center our educators make every effort to keep the facility clean and sanitary to reduce the spreading of germs as much as possible. Here are some things that you can do at home to help reduce spreading germs and keep your child healthy.

10 Tips to Keep Your Child Healthy at Child Care

  1. Encourage hand washing – every time they eat, use the restroom or wipe their nose. Hand sanitizer is ok for older children and adults but creating a habit of washing with soap and water is better.
  2. Teach children to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue or have them shield their sneeze or cough with the bend of their sleeved arm and then go and wash their hands as a follow-up measure. The idea is to contain the germs and not spray them into the direction of others. Using your hands to cover your cough or sneeze actually increases the risk of spreading germs because you are directly contaminating your hands.
  3. When your child has a fever, it is best for them to stay home. We understand that it is often difficult to miss work and stay home with a sick child, but it will allow your child the space to heal and hopefully prevent the illness from spreading to other children. Some common symptoms that warrant staying home include fever over 101, new onset of diarrhea, vomiting, rash, pinkeye or just not feeling well.
  4. Keep the temperature in your home a little on the cooler side. Warmth and dampness can cause bacteria to spread and grow. Turning down the thermostat a few degrees can help keep you healthier. Keep in mind that newborns cannot regulate their body temperature yet, so this is not recommended in homes with new babies.
  5. Clean toys on a regular basis, wash bed linens, blankies and replace toothbrushes regularly. Washing the car seat cover periodically is also a good idea.
  6. It can be difficult but try to distance yourself from your children when you’re feeling under the weather. Wash hands, and don’t share food, drinks or utensils.
  7. Disinfect your home after illnesses. Clean doorknobs, light switches, tables, bathrooms, etc.
  8. Stay up to date on all vaccines that are required for your child and make sure your family members get their flu shot. I strongly recommend not letting anyone kiss your infant on the face, head or hands. Don’t be shy about asking people not to touch or kiss your baby. It can literally be a life altering decision. I cannot stress this enough.
  9. Encourage your child to eat a balanced diet that includes fruits, veggies and lean meat to help boost their immunity naturally. If your child is not a good eater then you may want to ask your pediatrician if vitamins are recommended.
  10. Understand that the health regulations that govern your child care facility are put in place for your child’s safety.
