Inspiring Business Women: Lessons from Leaders on National Business Women’s Week

National Business Women's Week

As we celebrate National Business Women’s Week, we take the opportunity to highlight the incredible accomplishments of women in business, both in the past and today. This observance, held during the third full week of October each year, encourages us to reflect on the journey women have taken to earn their place in the business world and to look forward to the progress still to come.

What is National Business Women’s Week?

National Business Women’s Week began as an initiative by the National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs in 1928. It was designed to recognize the contributions women make in the workplace and to promote opportunities for women’s professional growth. Over the decades, this week has been a time to celebrate the resilience, innovation, and leadership of women across industries, while also acknowledging the barriers they’ve overcome and the challenges that remain.

The History of National Business Women’s Week

In its early years, National Business Women’s Week aimed to improve conditions for working women and encourage young women to pursue careers in business. Today, it remains a powerful reminder of the strides women have made in business while calling attention to the ongoing fight for gender equality in the workplace.

Amanda Key | Quality Assurance CoordinatorThis year at Creative Corner, we proudly spotlight Amanda Key during National Business Women’s Week. Amanda is the Quality Assurance Coordinator at Creative Corner, where she plays a vital role in ensuring the highest standards for our children’s learning environment. However, her talents extend well beyond our preschool walls. Amanda also serves as the Assistant Director of Nursing at the National Healthcare Corporation in Gallatin, TN, demonstrating her versatility and leadership in multiple industries.

Amanda’s career in business was shaped by inspiration, perseverance, and a commitment to continuous growth. In our interview, she shared valuable insights about her journey as a woman in business, the challenges she’s faced, and the lessons she’s learned.

What inspired you to start your career in business?

“I was inspired to start my career in business by the drive and motivation I saw in other women,” Amanda reflects. Her journey was not only self-driven but also influenced by the remarkable women around her, fueling her determination to succeed and contribute.

What challenges have you faced as a woman in business, and how have you overcome them?

One challenge Amanda mentioned was the feeling of being made to feel inferior, a common experience for many women in the workplace. However, Amanda rises above these obstacles by focusing on her work and staying goal-oriented. “Whether intentional or not, I choose daily to rise above the brusque actions of others by working hard and focusing on my goals,” she shares.

Who is your biggest role model in business, and why?

When asked about her role model, Amanda speaks fondly of her “sister-friend” Catina Ross. “Her fearless ambition is remarkable and inspiring,” Amanda says, showing the importance of supportive relationships and strong female role models in business.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to young women entering the business world?

For young women starting out, Amanda advises, “Do it afraid.” She acknowledges the fear and uncertainty that can accompany new ventures but stresses the rewards that come with taking risks. “You’ll take risks, but they will be met with great rewards both personally and intellectually,” she adds.

How do you balance work and personal life, especially during busy times?

For Amanda, balancing her demanding career and personal life requires planning and flexibility. She credits her family’s understanding and the importance of coordinating schedules and being adaptable. “We discuss our upcoming schedules for the week and we coordinate appointments, personal time, and family outings,” Amanda explains.

What accomplishment are you most proud of in your career?

Amanda takes pride in the impact she has had on others. She recalls the joy of helping start a child care center, which provided parents with a safe and nurturing place for their children. In her current role, she finds fulfillment in seeing her team come together to provide quality care for elders.

How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?

To stay motivated, Amanda taps into her creative side, keeping journals and lists to track her goals. She’s also inspired by a favorite quote from Henry Ford: “Obstacles are what we see when we take our eyes off the goal.”

What’s the best business decision you’ve ever made?

For Amanda, the best decision was simply starting her business journey. The lessons and wisdom she’s gained from her experiences, far more valuable than the profits earned, have helped her grow both personally and professionally.

If you could change one thing about the business world for women, what would it be?

Amanda advocates for more support for women entering the business world. “I would create an educational and supportive platform for women interested in entering into the business world,” she shares, envisioning a space where women can find resources, exchange ideas, and receive mentorship.
